Advisory Retainer

Work with an experienced HR executive to complete an in-depth assessment of your business and create a "people plan" to help you navigate the road ahead. Ensure you have the right people, in the right places, at the right time, with the best tools and processes to support them. 

While you may have very good operational HR support in place, there is tremendous value in engaging someone who has "been there" and "done that" multiple times, particularly when you are facing a point of major transition. We can help you see around corners and position yourself and your organization more effectively in those periods of transition. What types of occasions are we talking about? A new investor, a new round of funding, run-up to an IPO, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, layoffs, leadership changes, and yes - even a pandemic. 

How It Works

HR Advisor We start by taking a 360-degree view of your company's culture, processes, and people. In less than 60 days, we conduct an in-depth needs analysis, complete discovery via primary and secondary sources, and create a road map with you to address key opportunities. After completing an initial organizational assessment, we share the findings with you and then move on to developing a "People Plan" to help you identify, prioritize, and execute desired initiatives. We partner with you closely, ensuring progress continues against your goals, new developments are quickly accounted for, and your key leaders are supported along the way. This service is structured as a retainer, with a flat monthly fee going towards advisory services and executive coaching, plus access via text and email. A typical engagement includes:

  • client site visits on a monthly basis
  • bi-weekly video conferences
  • executive selection assistance (i.e. interviews, assessments, process design)
  • executive coaching / mentoring
  • collaborative design of strategic people initiatives (i.e. PEO implementation, OKR framework, change management, HR vendor selection, etc.)
  • involvement in key executive team meetings / calls / offsites
  • creation of a "People Plan" for the organization, identifying major priorities & initiatives

What We Don't Do

While we offer a broad array of coaching and strategic advisory services, we don't directly provide more tactical and transactional support such as: Contract recruitment and executive search Payroll / benefits / HR transaction administration Technical job skills training delivery Employee relations and employment law consultation Employee handbook and policy writing If you have a need in one of these areas, we have a deep network and a number of contacts who are likely to be well-positioned to assist you.


Engaging a seasoned HR advisor brings you 100% of their experience and strategic insight, for a small portion the cost of employing that person full-time. We have deep experience in people process design and implementation at organizations of all shapes and sizes. With that experience, comes the understanding that there is no single right answer or "one-size-fits-all" approach. While there are predictable challenges associated with rapid growth, each organization operates within a different context that your leaders, culture, and requirements will reflect. That said, any successful major initiative will possess several hallmarks, including executive sponsorship, thoughtful goal setting & alignment, a regular feedback cadence, stakeholder education, and strong ongoing communications.
